The bigger pouch
Your license
What the license from LonelyDuck is, how a Mac uses it, its 10 Macs, releasing one, a month offline, and refunds.
Your license is a line of text in the email LonelyDuck sends when you buy the bigger pouch. It lets your pouch hold up to 100 things on up to 10 Macs. Keep the email; treat the license like a password, because anyone who has it can use your places.
Use it on this Mac
- With ⌃⌥⌘V. Copy the license from the email, or the whole email, and press ⌃⌥⌘V in any app. The card knows a Carriel license and offers Use License. It isn’t kept as a thing.
- In Settings. Open Settings › About and choose Enter License…, then paste. Carriel finds the license inside a pasted email.
Carriel checks the license on this Mac first, then lets LonelyDuck know this Mac uses it. If this Mac can’t reach LonelyDuck right then, nothing is lost: Carriel tries again by itself.
Your other Macs
The license reaches them through iCloud Keychain, and each Mac with your pouch starts using it by itself. You enter it once.
Up to 10 Macs
Settings › About › Macs… lists the Macs that use your license and when each last checked. Release gives a Mac’s place back. If that Mac still uses your pouch, it asks for a place again the next time it’s online, so release a Mac you no longer have. Removing a Mac from your pouch (Settings › iCloud and Macs) and Remove Carriel… give its place back too. LonelyDuck’s account page shows the same list when no Mac is at hand.
When every place is taken, a new Mac says: “Your license is on 10 Macs already. Release one to use it here.” Until then it keeps everything and every feature, and takes new things up to 25.
A month offline
Each Mac checks its license with LonelyDuck about twice a week, and each check keeps the bigger pouch on that Mac for 30 days.
- With fewer than 5 days left, Carriel asks you to connect that Mac to the internet once. Check Now checks at once.
- After 30 days without a check, everything stays and every feature works. Only adding past 25 things waits until the Mac connects once.
A Mac’s first check sends the license, an id made for this Mac and your license, the Mac’s model (like “MacBook Air · M2”, never its name), a public key and a signature, and brings back this Mac’s 30-day lease. Every check after that sends only the id LonelyDuck gave the Mac and a signature. Macs… sends the license, and Release the license and the Mac it releases. Nothing from your pouch is ever in any of them, and LonelyDuck keeps the day each Mac checked in, not its IP address. A free pouch never talks to LonelyDuck at all.
A lost email
Find My License on LonelyDuck’s site sends every Carriel license bought with an address to that address. It answers the same way whether or not there is one. Look in spam too.
Refunds
Within 30 days of buying, LonelyDuck refunds the whole price, for any reason: ask on LonelyDuck’s support page or write to support@lonelyduck.io. Each Mac learns of the refund at its next check, within about three days. Then it says “This Mac no longer uses a license”, keeps every thing, and takes new ones up to 25.
Who answers
LonelyDuck Software makes and sells Carriel. A question about a purchase, your license or a refund is answered on LonelyDuck’s support page; anything about Carriel itself, at Support. Both reach the same people.
