Install

  1. Open the .dmg and drag Carriel to Applications. To check the file first, run shasum -a 256 on it in Terminal and compare the result with the SHA-256 above.
  2. Open Carriel from Applications. macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet: choose Open. It checks Apple’s notarization first, and a copy that doesn’t pass won’t open.
  3. If you opened it somewhere else, such as the .dmg or Downloads, Carriel says it works from your Applications folder and offers Move to Applications. Nothing works well outside it.
  4. Carriel shows what it does in a few screens. When you turn on Open at login, macOS may tell you that Carriel added a login item.
  5. On your other Mac, the same. Signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Keychain on, it finds your pouch by itself. Moving to a new Mac

What your Mac needs

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Carriel doesn’t run on an Intel Mac.
  • macOS 26 Tahoe or later. Carriel’s card and panel are drawn with the glass macOS 26 brought.
  • Signed in to iCloud, with iCloud Keychain on, to keep the same pouch on every Mac. Without iCloud, your pouch stays on this Mac.
  • Touch ID if you have it. Your Apple Watch or your Mac’s password answers when it doesn’t.

Updates

Carriel keeps itself up to date. About once a day, its updater asks dl.carriel.dev whether there’s a newer version, and the request holds the version you run and nothing unique to your Mac. Before an update installs, Carriel checks LonelyDuck’s signature on it, its SHA-256, LonelyDuck Software’s Developer ID and Apple’s notarization, and it never goes back to an older version.

With Automatic, the setting it starts with, an update downloads quietly and installs while your Mac is locked and you aren’t using Carriel. Settings › About › Updates can also Ask First, or turn checks Off. What leaves this Mac

What changed

Every release’s notes are on the changelog, which is also a feed. After an update, Carriel’s menu bar part says it once, with What’s New.
