Getting Carriel

Updates

How Carriel keeps itself up to date, what it checks before it installs anything, and what to do if an update didn’t install.

Carriel keeps itself up to date. You don’t need to do anything, and an update never touches your pouch: your things are in your iCloud and on this Mac, not inside the app.

How it checks

About once a day, and when you log in, Carriel starts a small helper, Carriel Updater, which asks dl.carriel.dev whether there’s a newer version and then quits. The request holds the version you run and nothing unique to your Mac. You can check at once with Check Now in Settings › About, or Carriel › Check for Updates… in the window’s menu bar.

Your choice, in Settings › About

  • Automatic, the setting Carriel starts with. An update downloads quietly and installs while your Mac is locked and you aren’t using Carriel: never while a value is showing, and never while a copy waits to clear.
  • Ask First. The update downloads, and the pouch in the menu bar says “update ready”. Restart to Update in its ⋯ menu installs it when you choose.
  • Off. Carriel looks for an update only when you choose Check Now. With the bigger pouch, each Mac still checks its license with LonelyDuck about twice a week; see Your license.

What Carriel checks

Before anything installs, Carriel checks:

  • that the update’s description is signed with LonelyDuck’s release key;
  • the download’s SHA-256, against that description;
  • that the new app is signed by LonelyDuck Software (team RD9TC9MV83) and notarized by Apple;
  • that it’s newer than any version this Mac has had, so nobody can send an older one back.

If any check fails, nothing changes, and Carriel says which version wasn’t installed. If it hasn’t been able to check for 90 days, Settings › About says that too.

While it installs

Carriel quits for a moment: it locks, clears its copy from the clipboard if it’s still there, puts the new version in place and opens again. If the new version doesn’t start, Carriel puts the one you had back. The first time you open the pouch afterwards it says Carriel is now the new version, with What’s New, which opens the changelog.

If an update didn’t install

Download the newest version from carriel.app/download, quit Carriel, and drag the new copy over the one in Applications. Your pouch, your settings and your license stay as they are. If it keeps failing, write to Support with the words Carriel showed.
