Getting Carriel

Installing Carriel

Download it, drag it to Applications, open it. What macOS asks the first time, why Carriel lives in Applications, and what your Mac needs.

Install it

  1. Download Carriel from carriel.app/download. The page lists the file’s size and SHA-256; to check the file, run shasum -a 256 on it in Terminal and compare.
  2. Open the .dmg and drag Carriel to the Applications folder.
  3. Open Carriel from Applications. macOS asks whether you want to open an app downloaded from the internet: choose Open. Carriel is notarized by Apple and signed by LonelyDuck Software, and macOS checks both first.
  4. Carriel shows what it does in a few screens and starts its menu bar part. When you turn on Open at login, macOS may tell you that Carriel added a login item.

Or install it with Homebrew: brew install --cask carriel-app/tap/carriel. It installs the same notarized download, and Carriel then updates itself the same way.

Why Applications

Carriel works from your Applications folder: from there it can open when your Mac starts and keep itself up to date. If you open it from the .dmg or from Downloads, Carriel says so first and offers Move to Applications, which moves it there and opens it again. If a copy is already there, moving this one replaces it; your pouch isn’t in the app and isn’t touched.

What your Mac needs

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Carriel doesn’t run on an Intel Mac.
  • macOS 26 Tahoe or later.
  • Signed in to iCloud with iCloud Keychain on, for the same pouch on every Mac. Without it, your pouch stays on this Mac.

Carriel asks for no other permission: no Accessibility, no Full Disk Access, no screen recording and no notifications. ⌃⌥⌘V works without any of them.

If Carriel won’t open

  • macOS says it can’t be opened, or that it’s damaged. Download it again from carriel.app/download and compare the SHA-256: a copy from anywhere else, or one that changed on the way, won’t pass Apple’s check, and that’s the check working. Never turn Gatekeeper off for it.
  • It opens, then asks to move. Choose Move to Applications. Carriel doesn’t start its menu bar part from anywhere else.
  • Nothing appears in the menu bar. On a MacBook with a notch, a crowded menu bar can hide the pouch behind the camera; press ⌃⌥⌘V, or see ⌃⌥⌘V does nothing.
