Getting Carriel
Uninstalling Carriel
Remove Carriel from a Mac in one step, what stays in your iCloud, and how to do it by hand.
Remove Carriel…
The tidy way is in Carriel itself: open Settings › About and choose Remove Carriel…. Carriel then:
- gives this Mac’s place on your license back, if it uses one;
- has its menu bar part delete its files and its keys on this Mac, then quit;
- stops opening at login;
- deletes its window’s files on this Mac, moves itself to the Trash and quits.
macOS may still list Carriel in System Settings › General › Login Items until you restart; it won’t open. macOS also keeps the menu bar part’s folder, ~/Library/Containers/dev.carriel.app.agent, with nothing of your pouch left in it.
If this Mac can’t reach LonelyDuck at that moment, Carriel says so and offers Remove Anyway; release this Mac later in Settings › About › Macs… on another Mac.
What stays
Your pouch stays in your iCloud, with your other Macs, and its key stays in iCloud Keychain: deleting either here would take it from every Mac. Your license stays there too, for your other Macs. Install Carriel again and your pouch comes back, on this Mac as a new Mac in your pouch.
Carriel says so first when removing it loses something: if your pouch isn’t in iCloud, this Mac holds its only copy, and Remove Everything deletes every thing in it, for good; if this Mac has changes iCloud doesn’t have yet, wait for Up to date in Settings › iCloud and Macs, or Remove Anyway loses them.
To take this Mac out of your pouch for good, as when you sell it, remove it from another Mac first, in Settings › iCloud and Macs. Your Macs and iCloud says what that does.
By hand
If Carriel isn’t at hand, or you’d rather do it yourself:
- In the Carriel window, open Settings › General and turn off Open at login.
- Quit Carriel from the ⋯ menu in the pouch’s panel (Quit Carriel).
- Drag Carriel from Applications to the Trash.
- If System Settings › General › Login Items still lists Carriel, remove it there. Never reset other apps’ login items to do it.
Done by hand, this Mac keeps its place on your license until you release it in Settings › About › Macs… on another Mac, or on LonelyDuck’s account page. Carriel’s encrypted copy of your pouch stays in ~/Library/Containers/dev.carriel.app.agent, sealed with keys that work only on this Mac.
With Homebrew
If you installed Carriel with Homebrew, use Remove Carriel… first, then run brew uninstall --cask carriel to clear Homebrew’s record of it; that works even once the app is in the Trash. brew uninstall --zap --cask carriel also deletes Carriel’s caches, logs and settings files. It never touches your pouch’s sealed copy, your iCloud or your license, and it gives no place on your license back: Remove Carriel… does that.
