Keys and your Macs

Your Macs and iCloud

How your pouch stays the same on every Mac, what happens offline, and how to remove a Mac you’ve lost or sold.

How it stays in step

Whatever you tuck in, change or delete is sealed on that Mac and sent to your iCloud, into CloudKit’s private database for Carriel. Your other Macs pick it up, usually within moments. A delete on one Mac moves the thing to Recently Deleted on all of them.

Every Mac also keeps its own sealed copy of your pouch, so it works offline, and a Mac that can’t reach iCloud for a while loses nothing.

Offline

When this Mac is offline, the panel says so. You can tuck things in and take them out as usual: changes wait here and go to iCloud when you’re back online.

Settings › iCloud and Macs

In the Carriel window, Settings › iCloud and Macs shows whether this Mac is up to date with iCloud, and lists every Mac in your pouch with when it was last seen.

Remove a Mac

Remove a Mac you’ve lost, sold or given away, so it can’t open what you tuck in from now on. A removed Mac can’t join your pouch again in this version of Carriel, so remove only a Mac you’re done with.

  1. In Settings › iCloud and Macs, choose Remove… beside the Mac, and confirm with Touch ID. Carriel makes a new pouch key, and the removed Mac doesn’t get it.
  2. Remove the Mac from your Apple Account too, in System Settings or Find My. While it’s still on your account, it can still read iCloud Keychain.
  3. If it was stolen while unlocked and you have a pouch password, change the password.
  4. If anything in your pouch matters a lot, change it where it was issued: a removed Mac may already have copied what it could see before.

Without iCloud

If this Mac isn’t signed in to iCloud, your pouch stays on this Mac. Sign in, with iCloud Keychain on, to keep it the same on your other Macs.
