How buying works
Three steps, once.
LonelyDuck Software makes Carriel and sells the bigger pouch. Its checkout takes the payment, and Carriel never sees your card.
- Get the Bigger Pouch. In Carriel, open Settings › About and choose Get the Bigger Pouch, or use the button on this page. LonelyDuck’s checkout opens in your browser: an email address and a card, and no account to make.
- The email from LonelyDuck. Your receipt and your license, in one email. The checkout’s last page shows the license too.
- In Carriel. Copy the license and press ⌃⌥⌘V: Carriel knows it, and Use License puts it to work. Or open Settings › About › Enter License… and paste it. Your other Macs pick it up by themselves, up to 10 in all.
Already paid?
Your license is in the email.
Copy the license from LonelyDuck’s email and press ⌃⌥⌘V in any app, or paste it into Settings › About › Enter License…. Lost the email? Find My License sends every Carriel license bought with an address to that address.
Questions
Buying, your license, refunds
Why not the Mac App Store?
Carriel was going to be there. Selling it ourselves lets the free pouch hold 25 things, and lets a fix reach you as soon as it’s ready. You keep Apple’s checks: Carriel is notarized by Apple and signed by LonelyDuck Software, and macOS checks both before it opens it.
Is it safe to download?
Download it from carriel.app, never from anywhere else. Apple has notarized it, which means Apple checked it for known malware before we published it, and macOS checks that again when you first open it. It’s signed by LonelyDuck Software (team RD9TC9MV83), and the download page lists its SHA-256. How to check the copy you have.
Do I have to pay?
No. The free pouch holds 25 things and does everything Carriel does, on every Mac you use, for as long as you like. The bigger pouch only holds more.
What if I stop paying?
There’s nothing to stop: the bigger pouch is one payment, never a subscription, and it keeps every new feature for as long as LonelyDuck makes Carriel. If LonelyDuck ever stops checking licenses, an update that keeps the bigger pouch without them comes first.
Where do updates come from?
From us. About once a day, Carriel asks dl.carriel.dev whether there’s a newer version, and the request holds the version you run and nothing unique to your Mac. Every update is signed by LonelyDuck Software and notarized by Apple, and Carriel checks both before it installs one. Settings › About › Updates can ask first, or stop checking. What changed is on the changelog.
Does Carriel check in?
A free pouch talks only to your iCloud, and to dl.carriel.dev for updates. With the bigger pouch, each Mac also checks its license with LonelyDuck about twice a week, sending only the id LonelyDuck gave it and a signature. Its first check sends the license, an id made for that Mac and your license, the Mac’s model (like “MacBook Air · M2”, never its name), a public key and a signature. Nothing from your pouch is ever in it. A Mac that goes 30 days without a check keeps everything and every feature; only adding past 25 waits until it connects once.
Do I need an account?
No Carriel account. LonelyDuck’s checkout asks for an email address, for the receipt and your license. LonelyDuck’s account page also lists the Macs that use your license, if you sign in there with the same address.
How many Macs can use it?
Up to 10 at once. Each Mac with your pouch starts using your license by itself. Settings › About › Macs… lists them, and Release gives a Mac’s place back. More about your license.
How do I get a refund?
Within 30 days of buying, for any reason: ask on LonelyDuck’s support page or write to support@lonelyduck.io, and LonelyDuck refunds the whole price. LonelyDuck’s refund policy.
What happens after a refund?
Each Mac learns of it at its next check, within about three days. Everything stays in your pouch, and you take things out as before; it takes new things up to 25.
Why is it so small?
On purpose. Carriel is for the ten to fifty things you actually reach for: 25 fit in the free pouch, and more than that is what the bigger pouch is for. From 50 Carriel says how many your pouch holds, and 100 is as big as it gets, so it stays quick to look through.
