Keys and your Macs
Moving to a new Mac
Sign in to the same Apple Account, open Carriel, and your pouch is there. Nothing to export.
Your pouch lives in your own iCloud, and its key travels in iCloud Keychain, so there’s nothing to export from your old Mac and nothing to carry over by hand.
On the new Mac
- Sign in with the same Apple Account, and make sure iCloud Keychain is on: in System Settings, choose your name, then iCloud.
- Download Carriel from carriel.app/download, drag it to Applications and open it. Installing Carriel has the details.
- Carriel finds your pouch in iCloud and says how many things are in it.
- Without a pouch password, it opens right away.
- With one, type it once in Carriel’s own password panel, or use your recovery key if you don’t remember it.
- Carriel walks you through the rest: Touch ID, the ⌃⌥⌘V shortcut, and a first tuck-in if you like.
What comes across
Every thing, with its name, category, note and pin. Two things stay with each Mac: Recent in the panel, and when you last copied something. What you used when is this Mac’s business alone.
The bigger pouch
Nothing to do. Your license reaches the new Mac through iCloud Keychain, and that Mac starts using it by itself, as one of your 10. If all 10 are taken, Carriel says so and offers Macs… to release one. See Your license.
If your pouch doesn’t appear
A new Mac can take a few minutes to receive iCloud Keychain, and Carriel can’t tell “on its way” from “turned off”. If it waits for long, check that iCloud Keychain is on, then see A thing hasn’t reached another Mac. With a pouch password, your recovery key opens your pouch without waiting.
Your old Mac
If you’re keeping it, nothing changes: both Macs keep the same pouch. If you’re selling it or giving it away, remove it from your pouch first (Settings › iCloud and Macs), which also gives its place on your license back, then remove it from your Apple Account and erase it. Your Macs and iCloud says what removing a Mac does.
