Take things out from the menu bar

The panel. Click the pouch, type a few letters, press Return, answer Touch ID.

The panel is how things come out of your pouch. Click the pouch in the menu bar, and it opens under it with the search field ready.

Copy something

  1. Click the pouch in the menu bar.
  2. Type a few letters of what you want. Search reads names, kinds, categories, env names, accounts and notes, never values.
  3. Press Return. Carriel asks for Touch ID, your Apple Watch or your Mac’s password, then copies.

A notice drops from the menu bar, such as “Copied Stripe live secret · Clears in 30 s”, and the pouch shows a ring that drains until the copy clears. Copies and the clipboard says where a copy can and can’t go.

Tabs

Under the search field sit All and the categories that have something in them, always in the same order and with the same numbers: ⌘0 for All, then ⌘1 AI to ⌘8 Other. ⌃Tab and ⌃⇧Tab step through them.

In All, your pinned things come first, then the last five you used on this Mac, then everything else from A to Z. Search looks in the tab you’re on; when nothing matches there, the panel offers the matches in All. Type a category’s name, and the panel offers that tab.

Each row shows one fact on the right: a key’s length, a password’s account, how many codes are left, a file’s size, or how soon it expires. The highlighted row shows what Return will do instead.

What else a row can do

KeyDoes
ReturnCopy
⌥ReturnCopy as NAME=…, for a key with an env name
⌘ReturnShow the value in a small panel that closes by itself
⇧ReturnCopy the account, for a password that has one
→ or ⌘KEvery action for that row
⌘DPin or unpin
⌘OShow it in the Carriel window
⌘⌫Delete
⌘NTuck something in

Recovery codes lead with Copy Next Code. Files add Save a Copy… and Quick Look.

Esc closes the actions, then clears the search, then goes back to All, then closes the panel.

The footer says how many things are in your pouch (“26 things · in iCloud”), or the one thing to know right now: Carriel is locked, this Mac is offline, or another app’s Secure Keyboard Entry is on. ⋯ holds Lock Now (⌘L), Settings… (⌘,) and Quit.

Control-click the pouch for a small menu: Tuck In…, Open Carriel, Lock Now, Settings… and Quit.
