The Carriel window

For a longer look. Every thing by category, its details, Recently Deleted, History and Settings.

The window is where you look through your pouch, change a thing’s details, and set Carriel up. You don’t need it day to day: the card and the panel do the everyday work.

Open it

Press ⌘O in the panel, choose Open Carriel from the pouch’s menu, or open Carriel from the Applications folder. The window is a separate app that starts when you open it and quits once you close it. The pouch in the menu bar keeps running either way.

Find your way

The sidebar holds a search field, your pinned things as tiles, and your categories as sections, each with how many things it holds. ⌘K finds a thing by its name from anywhere in the window.

A thing’s details

  • Its name, category and kind, such as “OpenAI project key”. Click the name to rename it.
  • Its value, as “•••• 51 characters”, with Copy and Show. Show opens Carriel’s own small panel over the window: the window itself never holds a value.
  • For a key, its env name, with Copy as NAME=….
  • For a password, its account and where it’s used. For recovery codes, how many are left. For a file, its type and size, with Save a Copy… and Quick Look.
  • A note of your own, for what it’s for (never the secret itself), and an expiry date (Set a Date…).
  • Where it came from: when it was tucked in, and on which Mac.
  • Pin and Delete.

Every change shows a notice with Undo.

Add from the window

Tuck In opens the ⌃⌥⌘V card. Add a File… opens a file panel. The window doesn’t take dropped files: drop them on the card or on the pouch in the menu bar instead.

Recently Deleted, History and Settings

  • Recently Deleted keeps what you delete for 30 days. See Recently Deleted and Tidy Up.
  • History lists what happened and on which Mac: what was tucked in, changed, copied, deleted or put back.
  • Settings has five panes: General (open at login, the Dock icon, language, appearance), Security (when Carriel locks, the pouch password, the recovery key, Touch ID), Keyboard (the shortcut and how long copies last), iCloud and Macs (sync and the Macs in your pouch) and About (Carriel’s version and updates, how much your pouch holds and your license, Remove Carriel…, and the legal pages). Carriel › Check for Updates… in the menu bar of the window checks at once.
